How to Install Service SNMP on Linux RHEL 8 for PRTG - Hi friends, Good morning and welcome back to my personal blog. On this occasion, I will write a simple guide on installing SNMP agent on client servers for monitoring with PRTG Network Monitoring.

One excellent and real-time monitoring tool that you can also purchase is Paessler PRTG Network Monitor. With tools like this, you will find it easier to monitor the utilization of your servers, networks, and applications, enabling you to be more attentive when issues arise in your IT devices and use the logs as a starting point for problem-solving.

In this example case, I will be adding a server with the Linux RHEL 8 Operating System. Okay, let's go straight to the guide on adding a device for monitoring in PRTG. Here are the steps:

Preparation

Make sure your local repository or internet repository is active in order to install the SNMP package. If it's not active yet, you can refer to the guide on setting up a local repository.

Installation

# yum install net-snmp net-snmp-utils -y
SNMP Service on Linux RHEL 8 for PRTG Network Monitoring

Configure

Edit the SNMP configuration using the following steps:

# vi /etc/snmp/snmpd.conf

In the first configuration, I create a custom community name, which is essentially 'public'. Replace it according to your preference or the policies in your company.

# First, map the community name "public" into a "security name"

# sec.name source community
#com2sec notConfigUser default public
com2sec notConfigUser default kitsake

Also, add the following line to your configuration:

#view rwview included snmp.snmpEnableAuthenTraps
view systemview included .1.3.6.1
view systemview included .1.3.6.1.2.1.25.1.1

Restart service SNMP for apply configured.

# systemctl restart snmpd
# systemctl enable snmpd

Trying to add a Linux Server to PRTG

After configuring the agent inside the client server to be accessible from the server using the created community, now we just need to go to the existing PRTG server and add that client.

Adding Device

Open PRTG Network Monitoring - Right Click Add Device
Open PRTG Network Monitoring - Right Click Add Device
Open PRTG Network Monitoring - Right Click Add Device
Input Device Name - Input IPV4 Address/DNS Name
Activate Credentials for SNMP Devices - Input kitsake
Activate Credentials for SNMP Devices
Activate Credentials for SNMP Devices

Adding Sensors

Now, after adding the device within PRTG, the next step is to add the sensors that we want to monitor in PRTG.

Right Click on Device - Click Add Sensor...

Select the sensors that you want to monitor :

Search : type snmp - choose sensor

Here, I am monitoring my server with the following sensors:

  • Ping
  • SNMP CPU Load
  • SNMP Disk Free
  • SNMP Linux Meminfo
  • SNMP System Uptime
  • SNMP Traffic
